A Small History of Zion

E & R United Church of Christ

Zion Evangelical and Reformed began in 1898 as a member of the Reformed Church in America. The church was formed because of the influx of German immigrants to the Lenoir area.

By 1934, the Evangelical Synod of North America and the Reformed Church in America merged and Zion added the "E" to "E and R". Zion became a member of the United Church of Christ when the Evangelical and Reformed Church united with the Congregational Christain Church in 1957.

Zion was instrumental in helping establish Mt. Bethel Reformed Church and Blowing Rock Assembly Grounds both located in Blowing Rock, North Carolina.

In Collettsville, North Carolina, John's River Vally Camp was established by the same minister who helped organize Mt. Bethel and the Assembly Grounds, Rev. Dr. Walter W. Row.

Zion is still functioning as a member of the United Church of Christ and is very active both in the denomination and the Lenoir community. We would be honored if you would be willing to stop by our church and join us in worship. We warmly invite you to come as you are, bringing all that you are, so we may get to know who you are!

When you visit, you will see that we follow a traditional Reformed Service of Worship. Our hymns are sang in the accompaniment of organ and piano. The sermon is always taken directly from one of the three Bible readings for the day and explained by educated clergy; but, never fear, our faith is two thousand years old not our thinking!
